Traverse City, Michigan

Traverse City sits at the bottom of Grand Traverse Bay, where two long peninsulas split the water into arms so clear and blue that first-timers assume it is the Caribbean until they put a foot in. Old Mission Peninsula runs north through cherry orchards and vineyards to the lighthouse at the tip, Sleeping Bear Dunes is a short drive west, and Front Street has the kind of bookstores, bakeries and brewpubs that make people start checking real estate listings. In early July the orchards come in all at once, the bay fills with sailboats, and the whole state heads Up North for the weekend.
