Mackinac Island, Michigan

Sweatshirts, tees, mugs & souvenirs · Est. 1817 · 600 ft

Mackinac Island banned cars in 1898 and never looked back, so the loudest thing on Main Street is the clop of draft horses pulling the morning freight. The ferry drops you at the dock, Fort Mackinac looks down from the bluff the way it has since 1780, and M-185, the only state highway in the country with no motor traffic, circles the whole island in eight easy miles. Arch Rock frames the Straits in limestone, Sugar Loaf rises out of the woods like a stone chimney, and the fudge shops vent their kettles onto the sidewalk until you give in. Everyone who buys a slab is a fudgie, and nobody on the Island is ashamed of it.

Our Mackinac Island collection is built around that pace. The crewneck sweatshirt carries a horse-and-carriage badge in Straits blue and porch cream with a lilac accent and the 1817 incorporation year. The tee is simpler, just the island name and a small horse, right for a bike loop or the ferry ride back across the Straits. The mug and sticker set use the same artwork.

Everything is original, printed to order in the USA and shipped within days. It is for the people who work the summer season and the few hundred who stay through the winter, the families who have come every June since the lilacs were planted, and anyone who still hears hooves when they close their eyes.

Why we love Mackinac Island

  • ✦No cars have been allowed on the island since 1898
  • ✦M-185 is the only state highway in America with no motor vehicles
  • ✦Arch Rock frames the Straits of Mackinac from 146 feet up
  • ✦Fudge kettles have vented onto Main Street since the 1880s

Best time to go: Mid-June for lilac bloom along Main Street; July and August for bike weather on M-185; late September for color and thinner crowds before the ferries wind down.
