St. Augustine, Florida

St. Augustine was a Spanish town forty-two years before Jamestown and fifty-five before Plymouth, and it has the coquina walls to prove it. The Castillo de San Marcos has faced Matanzas Bay since 1695, a star-shaped fort built from shell stone that swallowed cannonballs instead of cracking. St. George Street runs through the old city gates past balconies and courtyards, the Bridge of Lions carries you over to Anastasia Island and the black-and-white lighthouse, and the Plaza de la Constitucion has been the public square since 1573. Minorcan clam chowder is red and spicy here and nowhere else, and the ghost tours start at dusk whether you believe or not.
