Scenic Highway 30A is a twenty-mile two-lane road along the Gulf where the sand is pure white quartz washed down from the Appalachians and the water goes from clear to emerald about ten feet out. The beach towns along it each have their own look, from the pastel porches of the New Urbanist villages to the old fish camps and scrub oaks of Grayton Beach, the oldest of them, where the dunes spill right into Western Lake. Those coastal dune lakes are the strangest thing here: rare freshwater lakes a few yards from the surf that break through to the Gulf after a big rain. Everyone bikes the Timpoochee Trail, everyone claims a favorite stretch of sugar sand, and everyone has a story about Topsail Hill at sunset.
