Kansas City claims more fountains than any city but Rome, and on the first warm Saturday of spring, when the Plaza turns them all back on, the claim feels true. The Country Club Plaza has been doing Spanish tile and terra-cotta since 1923, Union Station still has the grandest waiting room in the Midwest, and the Liberty Memorial tower stands over it all with a view that explains why the city sits where it does. Down in the Crossroads the galleries open their doors on First Fridays, over at 18th and Vine the jazz is still live, and everywhere there is smoke, because burnt ends are not a side dish here, they are a point of view.
