Louisville is pronounced Loo-uh-vul, and getting that right is the first test. The second is understanding that this is a river city with a southern accent and a midwestern work ethic, where the Big Four Bridge carries walkers and cyclists across the Ohio to Indiana every evening, Waterfront Park spreads out below it, and Whiskey Row has gone from empty cast-iron storefronts to a run of distillery tasting rooms. Cherokee Park was laid out by Olmsted himself, Old Louisville holds one of the largest Victorian neighborhoods in the country, and Bardstown Road in the Highlands is still where you go when you do not know where to go.
