The Catskills are the mountains that two hours of driving north from the city buys you, and they have been New York's escape since the Hudson River School painters first climbed up to Kaaterskill Falls. Slide Mountain tops out at 4,180 feet, the Devil's Path runs a brutal ridge over Hunter and Windham, and the Ashokan Reservoir sits like a mirror under all of it. Phoenicia has a tubing river, Woodstock has a village green that has not changed its opinions since 1969, and every creek has a swimming hole that somebody's cousin swears is the best one.
