Hudson, New York was founded by Nantucket whalers in 1783 who sailed up the river, liked the deep-water landing and built a port 120 miles from the ocean. The city they laid out is still here: Warren Street runs a straight mile from the river up the hill, lined with Federal and Victorian storefronts that now hold antique dealers, galleries, record shops and some of the best restaurants in the Hudson Valley. At the bottom of town, Promenade Hill Park looks across the water at the Hudson-Athens Lighthouse and the Catskills behind it.
