Outer Banks, North Carolina

The Outer Banks are a two-hundred-mile ribbon of sand held together by lighthouses, dune grass and stubbornness. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest brick lighthouse in the country, wears its black-and-white spiral at the elbow of the islands. Jockey's Ridge is a hundred feet of bare dune where hang gliders learn to fly a few miles from where the Wright brothers actually did it. Wild horses still walk the beach at Corolla, the ferry to Ocracoke takes an hour and feels like leaving the mainland for good, and every local directs you by the Beach Road or the Bypass, soundside or oceanside, and nothing else.
