Manhattan Beach is the South Bay with the volume turned down and the sunsets turned up. The pier runs out to the Roundhouse aquarium, where kids press their faces to the tanks while surfers trade waves on either side. El Porto, up at the north end, is where the dawn patrol parks before work, and the Strand below the Sand Section is the best people-watching in Los Angeles County. Downtown is six walkable blocks of coffee, flip-flops and the kind of restaurants you book a week ahead.
