Newport, Rhode Island has been a summer colony since the 1700s and a sailing town since before that. The Gilded Age cottages on Bellevue Avenue, led by The Breakers, are still the biggest houses most people will ever walk through, and the Cliff Walk runs three and a half miles between their back lawns and the surf. Ocean Drive loops past Brenton Point kites and the lighthouse at Castle Hill, Thames Street and Bowen's Wharf hold the bars and chowder, and Fort Adams puts on folk and jazz festivals with the harbor as the backdrop every summer.
