Huntington Beach is ten miles of uninterrupted sand with an 1,850-foot pier in the middle and a fire ring every hundred yards. The waves break on both sides of the pier year-round, which is why the pro surf contests set up here every summer and why the dawn parking lot is always full. Main Street runs straight inland from the pier, Dog Beach up at the north end is exactly what it sounds like, and the Bolsa Chica wetlands beyond that are 1,300 acres of egrets, stilts and tidal channels with a boardwalk through the middle. When the sun goes down the fire rings light up and the whole beach smells like woodsmoke and marshmallows.
