Gatlinburg is a one-road mountain town with the most visited national park in the country starting at the end of the street. The Parkway runs pancake houses and taffy shops for a mile, and then the Great Smoky Mountains close in: Laurel Falls, the one-way loop of the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail, Newfound Gap on the state line, and the long climb to Kuwohi, the highest point in Tennessee. Black bears wander through town often enough that locals barely look up. The blue haze that gave the Smokies their name hangs over the ridges most mornings, and in October the whole range goes orange.
