Asbury Park, New Jersey

Asbury Park is the Jersey Shore town that got its soul back. The boardwalk runs a mile between the Casino arcade at the south end and Convention Hall at the north, both 1920s beaux-arts piles that frame the beach like a stage. Behind them, Cookman Avenue turned from boarded-up to the best bar-and-record-shop strip on the Shore, the Paramount Theatre still sells out, and the music scene that started in the clubs here in the 1970s never actually left. Sunset Lake and Deal Lake bracket the town, the Carousel House sits empty and gorgeous, and the Fifth Avenue pavilion is where everyone ends up at dusk.
